Performance Critique: May 06

This is back in DC, I hosted a show with 10 audience members.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEQvGHcaXkg

2m30s Not sure why I went with a depressing story without a punch line… practicing improv and free association I guess

3m03s Random line for someone to yell out on

3m59s My hand motions should start from the top and go lower like shoulder, chest, waist. I went waist, chest, waist. It’s harder to follow

4m41s There was a group of six with three kids under the age of five all the way in the back. They started nursing an infant in the middle of someone else’s set.

5m24s I shrugged my shoulders three seconds too soon

6m10s The yearbook line isn’t working, need to drop it

6m33s Try reversing the order: “I get it, you’ll never dress up for me. And you’re boring in bed”

8m18s Stop saying “bam!”

8m29s This was new, I’m glad it worked

9m15s Build up the tension with a longer pause and shift locations before saying “Really? Me too!”

9m37s Need a more surprising word than “cardboard box”

Part 2

0m24s I tried a different type of positioning for acting out the two characters because it didn’t look good when I was turned away from the audience. I don’t think I like the left side / right side act out either…

0m44s Stronger “huge tubes”

Part 3

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD17lBnpAxU

This is me doing time between comics

0m28s This sentence sounds awkward… I need to get to “nascar driver” quicker

Part 4

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oATHdsEQ04

This me doing time between another comic.

0m48s Say “promptly” a lot quicker and maybe a finger snap

Overall: I did a decent job hosting and was able to do twelve minutes up front without looking at my notes. The new online dating face painting joke is working really well, and the new facebook line worked out pretty good too.

Back in DC, I think there were five audience members, three of whom proceeded to argue over their check while I was on stage. As I told one of my comedy friends, this is the kind of night were you might contemplate suicide afterwards.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMAtPdH8j9s

0m17s One comic brought three of his friends and his three friends proceeded not to watch any of the comedians, even their buddy. They’d just stare off into space. So I had to try to talk to them.

0m51s I really wanted to know how they knew each other but they wouldn’t give me any straight answers

1m21s I love when a new comedian doesn’t know to not talk during someone else’s set

2m01s I really said that before the set because nobody was paying attention

2m22s Doug is another comic

2m38s It was really distracting for them to argue and it’s $1.95 yuengling night

3m02s I love rewinding time

3m11s It’s even better when nobody minds that I do it

3m40s This was the only punch line I wanted to really test out tonight and it worked

4m47s Maybe the punch line should be “I get it, that’s the only time of year you’ll dress up for me”

5m35s If I say “bam!” one more time, I’m gonna punch myself in the face

5m46s The fall in love with me line got a response, not much of one, but for this set anything is pretty positive

Overall: The pain of this set was worth it because “I learned to face paint” got a good laugh

This is the feedback mic I go to on Sundays.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-ynWOS6bpo

0m36s One of the comics in this room is a clown

0m53s I love this new punch line about face painting, it can still be tightened though

1m52s Terrible pacing on the punch line

1m58s I love rewinding time

2m04s The Halloween part of the facebook joke still needs to be fixed

2m15s There was a random group of five people that walked in that didn’t speak English

2m51s Stop saying “bam” and just do the finger snap

2m59s Throw in a “you’d be surprised how often that happens”

4m01s I like the nascar driver part but it needs to be worded better

4m11s True story, and I actually told them that “woah, I won’t cheat… with just one of you”

Overall: There were four new punch lines that I was trying out and only one of them worked (face painting). The other ones have promise (facebook Halloween, take her to a comedy club for the second date and nascar driver) but need to be worded better

The 10:30 show was canceled, so this is the 1am prom show.

There were twenty five kids from the same limo and a group of four college girls who happened to wind up at this prom show. I’ve never witnessed a show like this before: six of the eight comics were unable to do any material because the kids were so ADD and disruptive that each set would devolve into a conversation with no punch lines within thirty seconds of opening. Even the “pro” comics who didn’t have to bark for stage time couldn’t get through their sets.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5-mMrdePcw

0m12s Look at all the talking before I even start talking

0m38s Having witnessed everyone else’s downfall before me, I decided to ignore all audience comments and just do my jokes

1m02s I’m talking faster than usual to try to get the crowd to shut up

1m29s Ignoring them worked for twenty seven seconds

1m37s I didn’t ask if anyone had dogs because I knew I’d never get the set back

1m49s This wound up getting less laughs because it wasn’t set up in the normal way

2m57s Notice the one girl responding to EVERYTHING

3m09s You can only ignore so much

3m27s It’s bad when your friends have to tell you to shut up

3m57s Sarcasm included free of charge

5m56s Look at the shot glass when saying what it said

Overall: Considering how everyone else’s set on the show got derailed like John Daly at a liquor store, I’m really proud of my set. I won’t be submitting this tape to any comedy festivals, but this set and the April 15th set  where the host was getting into a fight with audience members while I was on stage, are my two best instances of concentration.

This is the 8:30 Saturday Show, there were around twelve people in the audience

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmmKDi7cPoA

0m11s The host hadn’t been on stage for a month and didn’t do a single joke the whole time, and I was the first comic up after him

2m04s A lot of my mini punch lines are missing

4m22s This was my first attempt to do the “yearbook” line on purpose

4m35s The yearbook line seems to ruin the flow but it got the older people to laugh

5m07s Good improv line, I should save it for when there are older audience members

6m34s Signs of life from the audience

7m27s Slight pause between “that said” and “snuggle slut”

Overall: Quiet response from the crowd, I could’ve been a little higher energy. I also may have wanted to do some extra crowd work since I saw the host didn’t get too many laughs from his crowd work / jokes
