Performance Critique: April 12

This is the Sunday feedback mic

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZzpMkd30L4

0m15s I’m trying out a new joke, I think the concept of being mistaken for a homeless person should be really funny… especially if it earns you more money than your regular job

1m20s I don’t think there was a single girl in this crowd of comics

2m40s Not

2m44s This was a call back to another comic. He always says “I love this crowd” when he’s not getting laughs

2m57s 89thandBroke.com is my girlfriend’s website. She requested a joke about it, so I’m trying it out

3m35s I apologize in advance for having to try out 20 different bad puns… on the bright side I’ve cut it down to 3 after this

4m41s Saying you’re doing terribly to a roomful of comics is a guaranteed way to get a laugh

Overall: I tried out mostly new stuff here, and there’s a reason it’s called “new stuff”

This is the last show of the night, the 12am show. I got on right after they paid the bill at around 2am.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUW8f-ZI28Q

0m35s It’s official: opening with “I don’t know if you noticed this, but I am adorable” only works at a bar, not a comedy club

1m14s I started drinking while waiting to go

2m10s Two bill jokes is enough, three is too many

2m27s These girls wound up going out to a bar with me and two other comics after the show

3m21s I like the technique of taking charge when an audience member doesn’t answer by giving them their answer, just gotta be careful not to overuse it

4m08s Don’t say “third date” twice

4m27s The bombing starts….

5m10s Is this Dresden during WWII?

5m28s Not sure why I said that, no more drinking during shows for me

6m24s Pretty painful two last minutes

Overall: Like a relief pitcher in baseball, I conveniently forgot how badly I bombed those last two minutes until I re-watched the video… repressed childhood memories coming up next! I don’t mind bombing every once in a while as it keeps me hungry and motivated, plus it’s good to power through the pain every once in a while. It’s clear I lost the crowd at “love at first drink, huh?” The only frustrating thing about this set is I wound up watching most of the show, and I know I would’ve gotten a much better response if I had gone up an hour earlier before everyone came down from their alcohol high and started getting tired (I still should have been able to keep the crowd’s laugher though)

Second show of the night, this is the 10:30

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-gbo9NjFXU

0m19s Trying this new opening line a couple times, but it’s not having the results I’d like

1m53s No need to say “I’m a terrible person” before the joke

2m47s Not sure if I should’ve forced their answer or tried to coerce something for a little longer

3m20s I missed doing the finger snap and point for “that’s your first date”

3m29s This line is repetitive and not needed, but at least I didn’t completely forget about the finger snap and point

4m40s I do appreciate a funny audience, even if they put me at a loss for words because I’m laughing

5m14s No reason to explain it

5m52s I should say “I’ll tell you” before “that’s demasculating”

6m37s The closing was weaker than I would’ve liked

Overall: Decent set but nothing special, I’m just getting my reps in and figuring out the order and details of some jokes. The audience member enquiring about the orgy was pretty funny though.

“Fans, Friends and Followers” Quotes Part 2/2

This is the second part of what I found to be the most important quotes from the book Fans, Friends and Followers. (Part 1 can be found here.)

“My idea of success is the ability to make your films your way, and share them with people all over the world. That’s success.” -M dot Strange (56)

“In neither case did we think, “A-ha, this will get people to buy our records.” It has always been our position that the reason you wind up in a rock band is you want to make stuff. You want do creative things for a living.” -Damian Kulash (62)

“Every show I do, people sign up for the mailing list. Bill Clinton considered his presidency a permanent campaign, and that’s the way you have to look at your career.” -DJ Spooky (65)

“I spend more time interacting with the audience than I spend recording and producing the show.” -Brian Ibbott (76)

“I figured that the way to do it is to give out your complete archives for free, which increases the viral nature of the site, and it turns casual fans into die-hard fans, and even evangelists for your art online. It can take years of relationship-building before someone considers themselves a fan, and is willing to plunk down money.” -Dave Kellett (83-84)

“I understand why people don’t want to put in the time it takes to develop an audience and a business, or who don’t think they can make it work. It’s definitely an investment of time – maybe close to a decade – but most careers take a decade or so of investment before something really happens. Think about a doctor. The careers worth having are worth working for over years and years.” -Dave Kellett (85)

“As an artist, you have to do it because you love it. If you’re doing it for that reason first, you’ll find you’re producing better work, which attracts an audience. They can tell when you’re enjoying it. That carriers you through what are going to be lean years.” -Dave Kellett (85)

“I do several different things. I write, I act, I do stand-up, and I make films. You can now do a hundred different things, and they all come together to form your career.” -Eugene Mirman (100)

“The only advice I have is, you should go do things and try things, and in ten years, you’ll most likely succeed.” -Eugene Mirman (100)

“The whole thing is, you’re freelancing. If you expect that some big company will swoop in and give you a bunch of money and make you a star – that’s a flawed business model.” -Eugene Mirman (101)

Performance Critique: April 11a

I wound up doing three shows this night, here’s the 8:30 show

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1sfYZ2e1Mk

0m11s I told the MC to say I was a terrible person. Telling the crowd they won’t like me was a bit much

0m35s I tried a new opening line, not a huge fan

4m25s “Tibet” should be the last word, not “sign”

5m01s I like explaining the joke and getting a laugh when I explain it

Overall: This was a decent set but I’m not sure there’s any benefit to being introduced in a special way anymore
